The first book in Elia's Worldmaker of Yand trilogy was Yildun and was what my introduction to the Worldmaker Universe was. First I was attracted to the cover art; the armored woman with bright wings and blurb sounded good. From the first page, I was carried away by the combining of science fiction and fantasy with a compelling (and well-woven) tale mixing political intrigue, celestial magic, and heartwarming personal relationships. Yanara as a protagonist was a very interesting character to begin with. I could relate to her trying to handle her worldmaker abilities, her family dynamics, and her fierce determination to protect her world and her loved ones. I couldn’t help but get behind her and every game of vicariousness, every win or loss.

But the supporting characters, like Mandolen, Frost, and, well, the adorable children, are not just background characters for Yanara’s quest; instead, they’re full characters with their own stories, motivations, and relationships that flesh out the story. I liked the relationship between Yanara and Frost, coming off as very awkward and very new and eventually melting away to reveal a deep and abiding love.

The world-building is incredible. It is a good world, with great creatures, great landscapes, and a terrific magic system. There is a lot to like in Elia's world. The detail with which the locations are described, like the thrumming bustle of Dragonslair, was enough that I felt like I was there with Yanara, experiencing the glory of the moons and surrounding world of Yand.

The editing was excellent. It’s a fluid, engaging way to write, so it’s not too difficult to lose yourself in the story. 'Worldmaker of Yand-Yildun' overall received 5 out of 5 stars from me. Occasionally, I felt a little overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information given, particularly the rundown of the K'tul's technology and military structure. But this is a minor gripe because the book is otherwise so brilliant. For anyone who enjoys science fiction, fantasy, weird, or simply a well-told fantastical tale with colorful characters and a lushly described world, it’s a must-read.
