Matthew Tysz’s, ‘We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies’ is an exceptional book with interesting world-building and magical realism. It is a perfect appetizer for a nine-course meal that will be the ‘We Are Voulhire’ series. This science fiction fantasy book has it all, from action, and adventure to magic, mind games and politics. I was always on my toes waiting to see what happens next.
The story focuses on a young boy, Galen Bray. He has managed to evade the clutch of his war-infested future by getting to Voulhire. As someone born and raised in a militarized country, he is in awe of Voulhire and the opportunities of a stable future it offers. He is determined to carry on his uncle’s legacy by continuing his forge. But Voulhire is not as peaceful and prosperous as it seems. Hidden under the surface of peace, wealth and the golden- age of Voulhire is a threat and fear of an age-old enemy, Riva Rohavi. The king is doing his best to make people forget about Meldorath, a powerful mage and the threat he possessed. The story is unfolded through multiple narratives which allows the reader to see the bigger picture.
The novel has a detailed and intricate world-building. A parallel storytelling style helps in creating suspense and mystery. Each character is built elaborately and there are nuances in their personality, ambitions and goals which add a new layer of complexity to the story. The book is finely edited without any typos or errors of spelling. The progression of the story feels slow at times. Since there are so many characters, it takes time to remember and understand their place in the story.
I give this book five out of five stars for its progressively engaging plot and captivating world-building. I cannot wait to read the second installment of this series.
