Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty is a young adult science-fantasy fiction with an adventure that can leave you at the edge of your seat, both figuratively and literally. The story follows Rynah as her home was destroyed, leaving her with the only option to pursue a legend that may not even be true. She goes on an adventure with four other companions from another world as they work together amongst all the trial and the chaos to save her people.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. My experience reading the book was absolutely engaging. The feeling of being dropped into a world both with similarities and differences to our own world was cushioned well by the detailed description of the planets, flora and fauna, and even the inhabitants of the other planets were described in a way that engaged my reading. Of all the elements that contributed to making this book a great read, I really enjoyed reading about Solaris and her witty banter.
The characters were all interesting and well-loved in their own way. Rynah and Brie were the characters that stood out to me the most because of how complimentary they were. Rynah is a soldier and she is unwavering in the face of danger. On the other hand, Brie is a high school girl who has shown more fear than courage when she joins Rynah on an adventure. I found myself looking for them and watching closely how each of them interacted with other characters, especially Solaris.
Solaris is a whole new level of character, even as a ship. With a chirp of her consoles, I can tell that she was happy and with the exhaust of smoke after a remark about her sassiness, I know she was peeved. This almost-personification of a character who is not only a ship but is also as real as the human characters of this book was able to take the spotlight and still leave room for others to grow during my reading. Sometimes, it took her mechanical chirps and the mentions of her machine structure to remind me that she was not human but a ship—a really cool ship, but a ship nonetheless.
There are very few ways for me to keep reading a book until the end and one of them was getting involved with the characters and being able to experience the adventure with them. Solaris Seethes was able to keep me waiting like a coil about to spring into action with all the things that were happening. I really enjoyed the experience of walking with the characters. The detailed description of the green planet, the snow planet, and even the pirate hub assaulted my senses as though I was there in those countries myself. The tone and mood showed a tense atmosphere in the green planet and it made me feel like a small herbivore in a forest.
When I first started reading the book, I did not think it would have so much detail. I did not expect to be attached to the characters. I didn’t think that Solaris from the title was actually the name of a character I would grow to like. I think people who enjoy a multiple-book series should read this book, as well as those who like reading about multiple different planets with distinct fauna and flora.
