Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
Matthew Tysz's We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a complex weave of suspense, flash-ons, characters' growth, and description of the setting. It is the story that offers the readers the chance to join a world that is filled with the mystery of the past and the struggle of the present.
Galen Bray, who is a refugee from a kingdom plagued by a brutal war, is now lost in the world of Voulhire. The sudden death of his uncle offers him an enigmatic legacy and danger in the form of a hero's journey. The political climate of Voulhire is complicated, so when Galen enters this realm, he finds himself in a world that has prophecies, magic, and many uncertainties. They had more secrets of the house; that's what I gathered of the plot as the main character Galen is drawn into a mystery that is dangerous to get too close to. He has dangerous adversaries to fight, riddles to solve, and in so doing, has to negotiate with rather unusual partners. During his journey, Galen discovers a secret that is related to his past, and that turns the tide for him. When the fate of Voulhire becomes precarious, more so, with the fires burning intensely, Galen is forced to rise beyond his challenge and think fast to protect the people of Voulhire, which he had grown fond of.
Galen's character is very believable yet quite interesting. These include the attempts to come to terms with loss and uncertainty. The minor characters help to create a more strong story, and they have quite wonderful relations with Galen, which contribute to developing the novel's plot. The pacing is good here: there are flashes of action and suspense with bursts of ill-wrought personality amongst the major characters. The mysteries untying the shroud over Galen's past and what is hidden in Voulhire keep the reader attentive. A reader is never in danger of being overwhelmed by the exposition of the world with Tysz skillfully weaving the characters' evolution into the mix.
The editing was superb, and there were no grammatical mistakes that were observed. Thus, many strong points can be singled out in the context of the novel; however, it is also possible to define a few aspects that require more attention in terms of further development. While the main characters are rather well thought out, some of the side characters could use more attention and might be developed further for the reader to like them. Also, although the flow is well maintained in most parts of the book, there are moments when the pace of the narrative seems to be a little off. I will give 5 out of 5 stars for We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies.
A New Arrival Under Great Skies is a very good start to the We Are Voulhire series for Matthew Tysz, who has all the potential to create a very interesting and engaging universe and characters. It's an interesting piece that should ideally be followed by the next part of the series. All in all, if the reader seeks an inspiring world with many characters and the intertwining of their fates, it is worth reading this book.
