Want a Sci-Fi book that relates to real life?Look no further! "Heaven and Earth" by Arturo Riojas is a work of fiction that brings real-life controversies of the effects of the situation of environmental awareness on the health of the human race. Specifically Cadmium poisoning. This book was truly an intriguing novel. The dedication was heartfelt. Riojas also did not waste any time with pointless character introductions, but instead just jumped right into the story. "Heaven and Earth" is not a typical novel of Aliens versus Humans, but instead a narrative of their cooperation.

In this book, Riojas takes a very interesting approach to the relationship between the human race and extraterrestrials. Many millennia ago a race of "aliens" planted seeds on Earth and left them to grow and progress on their own. Now they are facing the extension of their race. Their planet has been invaded by Muimdac, which is basically eating them. An alien comes to Earth to seek answers on how his people can be saved. He, however, only discovers that the human race is far behind in the predicted progress and they too are facing an epidemic. Cadmium poisoning (note that Cadmium spelled backward is Muimdac). He also learns that the health and well being of the human race and the environment are at the bottom of the list of important issues of the government.

He joins forces with two people, who work for the NASA and CDC, to look into and fight this problem. Together they dedicate their time and energy to research Cadmium and its effects on the health of the human race. They also make efforts to in building a better government that cares about its people and planet Earth. These two people took being approached by an "unworldly being" a lot better than I would have.

Throughout the novel, Riojas has added facts about Cadmium and its effects. While some may follow the author's suggestion to skip over them, I found them fascinating and beneficial. Not only did they provide me insight on some truths, they also made it easier for me to connect with the motivation of the three main characters in his novel.

This book was a real "page-turner". I never wanted to out it down and wish it had been longer than its 300+ pages. I would highly recommend this book to any Sci-Fi fan, and even to those unsure about Sci-Fi. Even if you are not a "conspiracy theorist" or a believer in the Government hiding truths from us, you will still enjoy this book. I found the twist on "extraterrestrials coming to Earth" intriguing and more entertaining than the typical "defending the Earth from aliens" theme.

While I have given this book a lot of praise, it is not a perfectly written book. I feel like editing left too many grammatical errors to slip past them. Also, the main human characters in the book spoke Spanish a few times. This itself was no the problem, but instead, I thought the use of brackets to translate what they said into English distracting but still found it helpful in understanding what they were saying. This is just my personal opinion and should not sway you from giving the book a try. Despite these issues, the book is still highly recommendable and I rate the book a 3 out of 4.
