Roan by E.R. Barr draws readers into a world where ancient Celtic myths blend seamlessly with the challenges of contemporary life. The novel follows Conor Archer, a young musician whose life takes an unexpected turn after a mysterious encounter in Chicago. Following his mother’s death, Conor journeys to Tinker’s Grove, a small town brimming with secrets, where he begins to uncover his unique heritage and his role in an old prophecy.

As Conor adjusts to life in Tinker’s Grove, he encounters a community unlike any other, filled with magical creatures, mysterious locals, and an ever-present sense of danger. He learns of his connection to the Roan, ancient beings with ties to Irish mythology, and discovers his own dormant abilities. Alongside his allies, Conor must face formidable threats, navigate the complexities of his new-found identity, and protect both the town and the mystical world he now belongs to.

The author does an excellent job of combining Celtic myths with modern-day issues, creating a unique world that feels both fantastical and relatable. The detailed descriptions of Tinker’s Grove bring the town to life, from its lush landscapes to its corners, where magic seems to seep through the cracks.

I appreciated how the author intertwined the mythological aspects with Conor's personal journey, making the stakes feel real and the plot unpredictable. The steady pacing and engaging dialogue kept me hooked from the first page to the last.

Each subplot weaves seamlessly into the main narrative, creating a tapestry of interconnected events and characters that hold the reader’s interest. The novel’s emotional depth and compelling character made me truly care about Conor's journey and the fate of Tinker’s Grove. This is where the novel shines; it takes the familiar trope of the hero’s journey and infuses it with fresh energy.

There were no significant drawbacks to the book, and I found no errors while reading. The editing was polished, and the writing style was clear and engaging throughout. For these reasons, I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars. I would highly recommend it to readers who enjoy urban fantasy, mythological tales, or any story that offers a mix of adventure, magic, and self-discovery.
