"Changing Masks" by Nicholas Metelsky is an engrossing journey into the life of Max, a skilled fighter whose spirit is mysteriously transported into another world. Max wakes up in Tokyo, inhabiting the body of a teenage boy named Shinji, who has been abandoned by his parents and lives in complete isolation, unnoticed by the world around him. This shift in reality is as disorienting for Max as it is for the reader, yet it sets the stage for a gripping tale that is as much about survival as it is about personal transformation.

The story takes an intriguing turn when Max, now living as Shinji, is coerced by his persistent and somewhat annoying neighbor, Shina, and her family into attending a new school. However, this isn't just any school—it's an elite institution for warriors, where the best of the best hone their skills. The tension mounts as Max/Shinji grapples with his new identity and the challenges that come with attending a school filled with skilled fighters, all while trying to keep his true nature a secret.

One of the most compelling aspects of the story is the unexpected twist concerning the school principal, a revelation that adds a layer of mystery and excitement to the plot. Metelsky does a brilliant job of keeping readers on their toes, weaving a narrative that is both action-packed and thought-provoking.

The character development in "Changing Masks: is exceptional, particularly in the way Metelsky portrays Max's internal struggle. The contrast between Max’s former life as a warrior and his current life as a seemingly ordinary teenage boy creates a fascinating dynamic that drives the story forward. Shinji’s interactions with other characters, especially Shina, add depth to the narrative and highlight the complexities of his new life.

The book is exceptionally well edited, with a smooth flow that makes it a pleasure to read. There is nothing to dislike about "Changing Masks". It’s a story that captivates from the first page and keeps readers hooked until the very end.

In conclusion, "Changing Masks" is beyond interesting and mind-boggling, earning a solid 5 out of 5 stars. Metelsky has crafted a unique and compelling story that will appeal to fans of fantasy and adventure alike.
