"Beating Death: Doorways to the Universe” by Sean O’Banion is a multi-layered and quite intriguing story with science fiction and elements of fantasy as well as philosophical themes. This is the second book in the ‘Beating Death’ series and immediately takes the reader into the struggle between the forces of light and darkness, with Robert O’Banion at the heart of it all.

This is not your typical hero, people; Robert O’Banion can fly and has three magical witches on his side. These companions assist him in moving into a world of threats, evil entities, and prophecies that date back to the creation of the world. The plot starts with Robert being dragged through an interdimensional wormhole by the evil Colonel Nick Shavers and fighting against Shavers’ demonic companions. But with the assistance of the earth’s most powerful goddesses and even divine beings, Robert travels through time and space to conquer the evil forces above and rescue the universe.

The novel is full of action and suspense, which makes the readers feel like they are part of the story. Another striking feature of the book is its rather elaborate characterization. Robert’s path from an antagonist to the protagonist of a cosmic battle is inspiring and exciting to follow. Conversations with different characters, such as JC, who is later shown to be Jesus Christ, make the book more than just a science fiction story.

O’Banion’s narrative is informal and funny at times, and it has suspense and philosophical thoughts in between. The book raises philosophical questions about good and evil, time and space, and power. The philosophical conversations, especially with JC, give the readers the authors’ deep thoughts on religion, human beings’ abilities, and the repercussions of our decisions.

While "Beating Death: Doorways to the Universe” is successful in many aspects, it is not without its problems. It can also be somewhat slow at times, and some sections are more densely packed than others, which may cause some confusion for the reader or a desire for more information. Also, the presence of several dimensions and time-traveling moments can complicate the story and may need the reader’s close attention to grasp all the details.

The book is incredibly well proofread, and there are no spelling or grammar mistakes. The fact that the novel incorporates other genres and themes in a harmonious manner is quite commendable, thus making the novel stand out in the sci-fi/fantasy category.

Overall, "Beating Death: Doorways to the Universe” is a fantastic book that will make readers not only interested and entertained but also think. The strong characterization, the highly appealing plot, and the themes that are dealt with make this book deserve 4 out of 5 stars. The novel is suitable for sci-fi and fantasy lovers and for people who like books that make them question the world and human values. It was very close to being a five-star novel, and with a little tweaking of the pacing and the storyline, it could be a five-star novel.
