We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz begins in a kingdom called the Land of the Princes, which has been at war for nearly twenty years. The princes are fighting for the throne. One of the main characters, Galen Bray, escapes this kingdom to go to Voulhire, following the request of his dying great uncle. Other important characters include Lord Eldus Alderman, a new governor dealing with a troubled town, King Wilhelm of Voulhire, a noble ruler, and Midius Maido, a high-ranking knight who works to prevent civil war. The villain, Meldorath, is a powerful mage seen as almost a demigod. There are also rebels known as the Riva Rohavi, whose true intentions are unclear. The world of Voulhire is beautifully crafted, with a rich history and diverse cultures that drew me in from the very beginning. I loved how the author took the time to create a setting that felt alive and vibrant, making it easy for me to immerse myself in this fantastical realm. The supporting cast, including Rowan and the Vilendrian guards, added depth to the narrative. Rowan, in particular, serves as a guide for Galen, helping him navigate the complexities of Voulhire. I enjoyed their interactions and how Rowan's knowledge of the land enriched Galen's understanding of his new surroundings.

While there were emotional moments, I felt that some interactions, particularly those involving Charlotte and Isla, lacked the depth needed to resonate with me. I wanted to feel more connected to their struggles and triumphs, but the emotional impact often fell flat. Again, I found myself intrigued by characters like Vidius Crodai and Bartrus, but I wished for more exploration of their backgrounds and motivations. A deeper dive into their stories could have added richness to the narrative and made the world feel more alive.

Due to the negative aspects I mentioned above, I therefore rate this book 3 out of 5 stars. This book was exceptionally well-edited without errors. Since this book is part of an ongoing series, it’s perfect for those who enjoy getting invested in long-term character arcs and world-building. If you like to follow characters over multiple installments, this series will keep you engaged.
