This narrative by Michael D. Komeshak is a science fiction thriller featuring astral projection and government conspiracies. It is about Bert Torin and his son Jonas who is exposed as an Ennead having the gift of projecting to eight other planets. The government, however, has other plans for Jonas to use in their secret program called Operation Dark Sky, which will use the boy to suit its interests, including human colonies, while Earth might still have a chance of being saved from an asteroid threat. At the peak of Jonas's abilities, Bert and his family are held captive in an underground, ultrasecret facility called Zone 55.

This underground maze comprises laboratories, offices, and apartments that become the most complex environment in which the protagonists have to find their way through a labyrinthine network of tunnels and pods. The major problem Bert is challenged with is how to keep his son, Jonas, safe and secure amidst all that high-stakes tension of captivity. It is further enshrined by the suspense of constant monitoring by government watchdogs, along with Bert's discovery of the clandestine Operation Dark Sky. Through storytelling, it does capture the emotional and psychic toll on Bert, especially at those places where drastic measures against his son are contemplated, very profoundly. The book was exceptionally well-edited and error-free.

The writing style adopted by the author in The Keepers is highly captivating. Detailed descriptions of Zone 55 created a feel of a specific place, family struggles, and decisions they had to take regarding their son, all of which made this novel great. Character development, especially that of Bert, was deftly handled and makes it easy to feel deep sympathy for his plight. Such suspense is kept continuously through the pacing of the story, as readers are always ready to continue reading and view what occurs next. The detailed description of the structure and operations of the zone added further realism and dimension to the story since it felt like one of these sites had been one of these sites that we have where UFOs have been sited. If I mentioned Area 51, would I be wrong? Moreover, the idea of the book was appropriately put across through the story development and the characters as well. All this made the book worthwhile.

While the plot is exciting, there are pockets where sometimes the tempo needs balancing. Some areas, especially elaborated descriptions of Zone 55, get pretty wordy and at times slow the flow of the narrative. In addition, more depth could be given to the story by further fleshing out some of the characters' backstories, specifically that of Chief Wikvaya. Perhaps a few more flashbacks or internal monologues would have fleshed out the character arc and motivated these characters.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it does remarkably well at building up tension with the atmosphere, which is very immersive and features well-drawn characters and a plot full of twists. Vivid descriptions coupled with gripping pacing constitute its positives, while it could have been edited further to deliver a somewhat more even pace. Also, the plot is suspenseful, and boldly, it brought me to my toes. Intricate details on the structure of the zone add realism and detail. I recommend this book to readers of science fiction and thriller genres, particularly any with government conspiracies and intricate underground settings.
