In the Heart of the Linden Wood was written by Ekta R. Garg and published in 2023 by Atmosphere Press. It is historical fiction that depicts the life and trials of Christopher, King of Linden, and the magic of Linden Wood.

"Something has changed. I can sense it in the way the trees have slowed their growth. I am the Keeper of the Linden Wood, it is true, but my power will only last as long as I do."

Christopher loses his father unexpectedly in a hunting accident and has to step into power. After years of condescension and emotional abuse from a tyrannical father and king, he lacks the confidence required to rule until he marries Lily, the love of his life, confidante, and number one supporter. The kingdom is now at peace, and the people are happy until tragedy strikes again: the Queen dies while trying to birth the heir to the throne. Christopher must learn to navigate the unfortunate loss of the most important person in his life as well as solve a mysterious problem that has arisen in the kingdom, all with his crown intact.

I really loved the author's writing style; I could easily connect with the characters (even the ones that drove me crazy) and see the scenes play out very clearly. Character development was great, and the book was evenly paced with no plot holes whatsoever.

I'd rate this book four out of five stars overall. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and my attention was held until the very last page. I cried with the characters and felt their frustrations as keenly as they did. I would recommend this book to readers of historical fiction, lovers of fairytales and magic, as well as newbie fairytale and historical fiction readers. You cannot go wrong when you choose this book.
