Beating Death: Doorways to the Universe by Sean O'Banion is a captivating urban fantasy novel that masterfully weaves together elements of witchcraft, spirituality, and supernatural forces. The story revolves around Robert O'Banion, a man with extraordinary abilities, as he and his allies confront threats from both the living and the dead.
The book Beating Death: Doorways to the Universe by Sean O'Banion is divided into three parts. The first part introduces Robert O'Banion and the diverse cast of characters surrounding him. Robert comes from a family of witches and seers, but he is the only male with magical powers. His ability to fly was discovered after he miraculously survived a fall from a bluff as a child. Despite being instructed to keep his powers a secret, he utilized them twice during his service in the Navy, putting him on the radar of the government. The author, Sean O'Banion, skillfully portrays the diversity of religious beliefs within Robert's own family, reflecting the complex nature of society.

In the second part, Robert navigates a complex and imaginative science fiction universe. He meets JC (Jesus Christ), who is not what he expected, and together they embark on a mission to save the universe from destruction.
The third part outlines a plan to take down the main antagonist, described as the architect of most evil in the book. The plan involves a collaborative effort from multiple groups, leading to an epic battle between good and evil.

I loved that Robert is a relatable and flawed protagonist. He was not portrayed as an overly strong protagonist who was all-knowing with super strength. Instead, he's a complex and multi-dimensional character with a rich inner life, making him easy to root for and empathize with. The supporting cast is equally well-developed and diverse. Sean O'Banion’s ability to balance the fantastical elements with the relatable characters and storylines is truly commendable.

While the book Beating Death: Doorways to the Universe, by Sean O'Banion is suspenseful and full of life, I encountered some challenges. The large cast of characters was overwhelming at times, leading to moments of confusion. However, this didn't ruin my experience, and the book remains a great read despite some small issues.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars because it's a really engaging and captivating read from start to finish. The writing is clear and easy to understand, with a few intentional grammar mistakes. However, I didn't give it a perfect score because the characters are quite complex, which sometimes made it hard to follow the story. Additionally, the book uses terms like "MS-13" that required me to do some research to understand the context. While this extra effort was a bit challenging, it also sparked my curiosity and made the reading experience more rewarding.

I highly recommend Beating Death: Doorways to the Universe, by Sean O'Banion. The book explores the eternal struggle between good and evil, resonating deeply with our everyday experiences. While it may not be suitable for those who prefer more serious books, fantasy lovers will definitely enjoy it.
