Review of Exodus
"Exodus" plunges us into a chilling future where a rogue neutron star, Ulysses, is on a collision course with Earth. This celestial threat looms large, leaving humanity with a dwindling number of years to escape the impending gravitational apocalypse. The world's leading powers have united in a covert mission: to build a fleet of massive spaceships, called arks, capable of carrying a select group of humans to a distant, habitable planet.
The narrative centers on Gareth Long, whose brilliant astrophysicist father, David, was integral in developing the technology for the arks. However, David tragically perished during a test flight of the first ark, the starship Aquarius. Gareth is left reeling from the loss, and he blames the government, specifically the President, Rebecca McCann, for the reckless haste that led to his father's demise.
Gareth's anger is further compounded by the discovery that his father was involved in a secret project, hidden deep underground in an Arizona complex. This project, even more ambitious than the Ark program, was designed to ensure the long-term survival of humanity. The truth is revealed to Gareth as he is transported to the complex to continue his father's work. The story unfolds in this underground city, where the families of those involved in the Ark program live seemingly normal lives, all the while shadowed by the threat of impending doom. Gareth struggles to cope with his grief and anger, while simultaneously trying to understand the true nature of the threat posed by Ulysses and his role in the government's grand plan.
As he dives into his father's research, Gareth uncovers secrets and conspiracies that challenge everything he thought he knew. He begins to question the president's motivations, the secrecy surrounding the project, and the true purpose of the arks. The story is a gripping journey of discovery, suspense, and moral quandaries. It explores the themes of loss, grief, the responsibility of leadership, and the lengths to which humans will go to ensure the survival of their species. As the countdown to Ulysses's arrival ticks down, the characters find themselves facing a choice: to cling to their past or embrace the unknown future, with all its risks and possibilities.
I find nothing to dislike about this book. It is a thought-provoking and engaging piece of science fiction that could leave readers feeling a mix of emotions, pondering complex ideas, and perhaps even feeling inspired to think about the future of humanity.
I give the book 5 out of 5 stars for its intriguing premise and compelling characters. The concept of a neutron star threatening Earth and humanity's desperate attempt to escape using warp-drive spaceships is a thrilling and original premise, while the characters are well-developed and relatable.
I recommend this book because it is a good read that balances high-stakes sci-fi action with sharp and realistic dialogue, capturing the personalities and motivations of the characters, and a compelling mystery. Combining these elements creates an engaging and thought-provoking story that will leave you wanting more.
