Review of Beating Death: Doorways to The Universe
"Beating Death: Book 2: Doorways to the Universe by Sean O'Banio. A riveting science fiction story about a society plagued by corruption, oppression, and injustice. In this dystopian world, the strong Harvey family rules supreme, oppressing the oppressed with an iron fist. Colonel Nick Shavers, a cruel mastermind, orchestrates the heinous crimes with his son, Randall Snake Shavers. Randall Snake Shavers, Colonel Nick Shavers' right-hand man, believes that violence is the ultimate solution. As members of the privileged Harvey family, they regard themselves and their relatives as superior to all others. For generations, the Harvey family has shared a common goal: acquiring a mythical heavenly talisman. Scratch "The Devil" Scratch, the mysterious genius behind the Harveys' schemes, gets his strength from the darkness that lurks within all people. He feeds off of the bad deeds and evil forces and energies that permeate the earth, utilizing them to further his own terrible plan to become the most powerful being in the cosmos with complete authority.
A light of hope appears in the person of Robert O'Banion among the darkness that envelops the city. Rob comes from a long history of witches, seers, and other mystics, and he is incredibly gifted. But his real strength comes not only from his magical ability and lineage but also from his unwavering faith in the goodness of humankind.Despite the rampant evil that surrounds him, Rob remains steadfast in his conviction that there is hope for redemption. He selflessly employs his wealth and abilities to aid and protect the innocent, prioritizing the well-being of others above his own. Rob's dedication to humanity sets him apart as a symbol of resilience and compassion in a world teetering on the brink of despair. Rob's relentless commitment to environmental preservation drives him to harness his scientific brilliance to develop groundbreaking nanotechnology. This technology possesses the remarkable ability to recycle all forms of waste, offering a glimmer of hope in a world grappling with pollution and environmental degradation.
Beyond his environmental advocacy, Rob harbors a profound purpose that remains hidden in mystery. As he delves deeper into his pursuit in life, he discovers an extraordinary ability: he can fly through the skies like a bird, even though he has no wings. This unique ability, predominantly associated with the women in his lineage, adds an enigmatic layer to his character. As the sole male exception in a lineage of powerful witches. Robert O'Banion defies societal norms to emerge as a courageous champion of hope. United by blood and a shared belief in equality and fairness, Rob joins forces with a formidable group of individuals, including the three most powerful witches: Jolie Schraeder, Doctor Greta Keene, and Emily Williams. These extraordinary, powerful women serve as guardian angels to Rob, and he also loves them more than life itself, their combined strength forming an unyielding force against the corrupt and evil forces that seek to enslave Samsonville and Jackson City. Together, they challenge the status quo, and their determination and compassionate spirits inspire others to join their cause.
As the story unfolds, readers are taken on a thrilling journey filled with twists and turns. As Rob, with help from the supreme being, The Creator of All, the O'Banion's Lineage, and the witches navigate treacherous obstacles from some folks who abuse their gifts and abilities, wanting more powers for themselves, they face formidable foes in their quest for a safer world and universe and to save humanity from total damnation. The author skillfully weaves together themes of power, resistance, and solidarity, creating a compelling narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats until the very end.The role the witches, Rob, and all the people that share similar beliefs, the likes of Abe Simms, the state police captain, Mike, a former veteran, and Greg, the leader of one of the city's most notorious biker gangs, played is what I love most about the book; it was that of love and hope that humanity and the universe can have peace with balance. If love for one another is greatly appreciated and spread, rather than evil being the order of the day, then there'll be no room for selfishness to begin with.
The narrative flow is excellent and captivating, leaving you wanting to go deep into the book. I also love the style used by the author's slang; it clearly makes the story more visually; the reader can picture and visualize every paragraph because of the excellent transitions, both in chapter and paragraph. The book will really have an effect on the reader, leaving you inspired with the desire to do things for the greater good. And it is a thought-provoking and timely book that explores the power of unity and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. It serves as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, hope can prevail and justice can be achieved through the collective efforts of those who dare to stand up and fight for what is right. As much as I love the book, it's not totally flawless; I've encountered several errors, but that didn't disturb the narrative flow. No doubt, the book is professionally edited.
The problem I personally encountered is that I wasn't familiar with some of the slang. For that reason, I was not really following, but after a few pages, I picked it up. So I feel if it can be addressed, it will counter the confusion because not everyone is conversant with some of the slang's. I rate the book 4 out of 5. Taking out 1 for the above reasons.
