Beating Death: Doorways to The Universe is a fantasy novel written by Sean O’Banion. We are taken on a journey by the protagonist himself, Robert O’Banion, as he tries to dispel the evil that is bedevilling the world. Rob has no choice but to eliminate this evil from its source, which lies in Jackson City. He is tasked with doing two things: destroy a wormhole and return a talisman to an old friend of his father. Rob is intentionally chosen for these tasks by higher powers, not only because of the superpowers he possesses but also because of his compassionate nature. He embarks on this journey with his family, friends, law enforcers, old mutuals, and three of the most powerful witches who happen to be his lovers. Though he has a team behind him and insight into most things, nothing comes easy as his life is in danger, and he finds himself having to make sacrifices as well as having to relive memories that inflicted pain on him in the past. Rob encounters extraterrestrial beings, biblical characters, historical figures, and deities.

I adored the author’s writing style, from the use of vernacular English to the intentional mistakes to the evolution of the plot. I loved how the author incorporated fantasy, science fiction, crime, mythology, and historical and religious accounts into this book. This intensified the plot as it progressed. I mostly loved how the author was able to create an intriguing story based on Harvey County. Lastly, I loved the underlying message that this book contained, which is that we should preserve the planet we live on, and everything that we do has a direct impact and a lasting effect on this planet we call home.

The major thing that I didn’t appreciate about this book was that it felt like the author was adamant about disputing biblical facts and scripture in particular, especially in the second part of the book. Even though this was merely for entertainment purposes, it wasn’t comfortable for me to read.

I enjoyed this book. This is one of the most creative books I have read. However, I wish I had read the novel that preceded this one, as I would’ve had more insight into the characters and the previous occurrences that were brought up in this book. I think it was smart of the author to compile many different genres into this book, as it will attract multiple audiences. It was not as erotic as it was vulgar. The book was well edited, with minor mistakes that I don’t think were intended. Therefore, I think this book deserves a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

Though this book is suitable for a vast audience, I would especially recommend it to lovers of fantasy, science fiction, and crime novels.
