The book “EMA” by Aian D. Grey has pictured the world in the year 2084 where the environment is on the brink of collapse and most nations have turned to an AI system called EMA to govern a sustainable economic system. EMA is designed to strike a balance between economic growth and environmental protection, all while ensuring a high quality of life for people.
The story follows the main character, Jason Webb, who lives in Montreal and is an admirer of Damien Minsky, the owner, and developer of AI “EMA”, while Möbius, an underground organization, that denounces companies or actions that run counter to sustainable development, believes that Minsky is diverting EMA's role for his financial gain.
Despite the promising premise, the book left me feeling somewhat disappointed. While the technical aspects of AI are well-explained, the plot and ending felt predictable and lacked the depth that could have made the characters more relatable. More descriptive language to the characters and their development would help the reader to better connect with the characters and their motivations, and make the story feel more immersive since it failed to evoke a strong emotional connection with the reader.
Despite these shortcomings, “EMA” offers a glimpse into a possible future if we don't take action to solve the environmental problems of today. It could appeal to people who are just starting to read sci-fi, as it provides a connection between today's environmental problems with what might happen in the future if the problems are not solved. It is also timely since the use of AI use has been on the rise in the last few years and the potential risks and benefits of AI are being discussed in the mainstream media.
Overall, "EMA" is a worthwhile read that could inspire readers to reflect on their actions and the impact they have on the environment.
