In this tale of love and loss, we follow the story of two cursed lovers with the odds set against them. Matthaios is destined to be the next Ceasar, Emperor of Rome, while his soul mate Sara is a simple servant in the palace. Matthaios is a humble prince who brings shame to his father’s legacy, Emperor Titus. Caesar wants his son to become as ruthless as he is and carry his name and legacy to the throne. Sara knows Matthias is nothing like his father but is made to believe he isn’t her prince charming. Sara’s values and heart are put to the test when she uncovers the story of Caesar’s true nature and her own family’s history.
I would recommend this book to readers who appreciate historical romances. I enjoyed following the two characters in this story. I’m giving this book a solid three out of five stars. I found it very well-edited. The story captured my attention right from the start. The plot had a few twists that took me by surprise. However, some twists felt rushed, and I was left puzzled, wanting more background. I understand this book is part of a trilogy; maybe the stories in question were addressed in the other books. Although this book is part of a trilogy, it can also be a stand-alone read. I wasn’t entirely lost in the story, and I believe readers can fully enjoy this book without having read the others in the series. The story had strong, descriptive writing, contributing to a successful world-building experience. The pacing has a good momentum from the start, supporting the quick development of the story.
This book has a light level of romance and some violence. I do want to add a trigger warning as it includes discussions of sexual assault.
