Review of A Kingdom Forgotten
A Kingdom Forgotten is a complex and multi-layered narrative that weaves together various plotlines and characters across different worlds and timelines. The story is part of the series "A Throne of Souls" and is known for its intricate plot and asynchronous timelines. The narrative follows several characters and factions as they navigate a world filled with magic, ancient prophecies, and interdimensional conflicts. Central to the story is the character Talemar, who finds himself in a strange, dark world after witnessing a devastating battle and the apparent victory of a character named Eldrac.
Talemar is on a quest that leads him to the Halls of Aaramus, a great chamber filled with books, artefacts, and treasures of knowledge and wealth. The story also features Damon, a mage in charcoal-blue regalia with a complex past and a significant role in the unfolding events. He is connected to Evanyil, a character with whom he shares a tumultuous and intense relationship. Damon is involved in a master plan that seems to be leading towards a cataclysmic event, referred to as "Zero Day." The book challenges readers with its nonlinearity and the need to piece together information from various points of view and times, exploring themes of survival and the role of technology.
What I like about this book is the poignant portrayal of the relationship between Gareth and his grandfather, Luke. The bond between them is depicted with a tenderness that contrasts with the grand scale of the magical and interdimensional conflicts that form the backdrop of the story. Luke's role as a mentor and father figure to Gareth is a touching example of how personal legacies can shape the destiny of individuals and, by extension, the world at large. Gareth’s evolution from a young man grappling with impending loss to a figure of strength and resolve is great to see. His character arc also speaks about the theme of destiny and how the choices we make in response to the legacies we inherit can define us.
I found nothing to dislike. The narrative is rich with themes of sacrifice, destiny, power, and the struggle between good and evil. It explores the concept of multiple worlds and the impact of actions across different realities. I also appreciate how the story is told with a mix of traditional narrative and more modern elements, such as advanced technology and interdimensional travel. The book was exceptionally well-edited and error-free.
I gave this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars due to the exploration of themes such as destiny, sacrifice, and the struggle between good and evil provides rich layers of meaning for readers to contemplate. Also, Gareth and his relationship with his grandfather, as well as the incorporation of both traditional narrative elements and modern concepts like advanced technology and interdimensional travel, made me give it a five-star rating. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy immersive fantasy stories with well-developed characters and intricate world-building.
