Dr. Grant Taylor, an adjunct professor in his early thirties at the University of Chicago, is summoned to Russia to handle his late uncle Randall's belongings. Randall, a research scientist passionate about expeditions, was declared dead by Russian authorities a year after failing to return from his final mission to Siberia.

While in Russia to handle his late uncle Randall's affairs, Dr. Grant Taylor uncovers mysteries within the research scientist's notes, including a warning not to trust anyone. This raises suspicions about Randall's lawyer, Boris Ustinov, and his niece, Irina, who has been assigned to accompany Grant but seems to be withholding information. Determined to unravel the truth, Grant decides to retrace his uncle's final expedition to Siberia's Zona region, despite the risks. What drove Randall to issue such a cryptic caution? What transpired on that fateful journey? And what secrets are Boris and Irina concealing about Randall's disappearance that could endanger Grant's own quest for answers?

An intriguing sci-fi romance, this book hooks readers from page one with its glimpse into the costly world of scientific research. Appreciating the sacrifices scientists make, the novel evolves compelling characters and an ingeniously suspenseful plot, though admittedly slow-paced initially. Baker's talent for strategically withholding information keeps you invested in uncovering the truth. This insightful, imaginative tale highlighting important scientific endeavors earns a stellar 5 out of 5 star rating for its engaging premise and execution. Despite minor pacing issues, the book provides an entertaining and thought-provoking experience overall.

Grant and Irina's connection is admirable. Observing events in Zona, they bond deeply. This narrative evokes strong emotions; some scenes made me cringe due to the author's vivid portrayal. Grant's leadership charm makes him my favorite character.

This flawlessly edited book is a must-read for science fiction enthusiasts, offering insights into unique plant and animal species. It caters to fans of romantic and action-packed novels. However, those averse to mature or gory content may want to approach it with caution, but overlooking this aspect leads to a truly enjoyable experience.
