"The Devil Pulls the Strings" stood out as an exceptional read, combining wit, engagement, and humor. Boone Daniels, an avid Renaissance fair participant, embarks on a journey to New York, filling in as the lead singer for his friend Flynn Michaels. Little does he know that beneath the surface of the city that never sleeps lies a world of hidden wonders. Traversing through time, space, portals, and elevators, Boone becomes the unexpected savior of his reality.

Alongside him are intriguing characters Sapphire, the French ambassador's daughter, Professor Wickham with his cryptic knowledge, and Detective Rizos, who adds a touch of unpredictability. The supporting cast amplifies the insanity of Boone's newfound world. J.W. Zarek excels in crafting a simple yet engaging writing style that avoids monotony.

Compared to other fantasy novels, this one's plot doesn't come across as forced or implausible. The narrative possesses depth and is crafted in a captivating and engaging manner. The character development showcases a refreshing level of originality, yet readers will find themselves able to relate to the characters. I even found certain moments particularly endearing. Zarek, the author, demonstrates excellent skill in character writing and story development, evoking emotions in the reader.

The plot unfolds seamlessly, featuring gasp-worthy foreshadowing, and a solid grasp of interdimensional magic physics. The world-building is immaculate, seamlessly integrating creatures, gods, assassins, prophecies, powers, spells, and music. I recommend the book to lovers of fast-paced modern fantasy, especially those with an interest in classical music or Paganini. The book is well-edited and earns a solid four out of five stars.

However, readers averse to descriptions of panic attacks, claustrophobia, and violence should approach with caution. "The Devil Pulls the Strings" impresses with its plot, humor, pace, characters, and prose, making it a standout in the realm of modern fantasy literature.
