Parabolic Magnetic Key by Nicolas Wudtke follows the story of Mick and Dave, known alternatively as Hawk and Leopard, as they make their way towards important battles and cities set in the kingdom of Garobansurov. Throughout their quest, they encounter diverse militaristic characters all united by their common enemy, the barbaric invaders of Milosia.
The events described throughout the story are both action-charged and reminiscent of popular works of fiction. A solid effort in worldbuilding was conducted, and the characters fit well within the fabric of the militant society that Wudtke established. With the help of some high-ranking generals, subterfuge, and near-magical items, including the novel’s namesake token, the characters managed to thwart their foes and turn the tides of the major battle near the end of the story. The narrative prowess is the principal strength of the book. There are also some elements of philosophical debate, namely about integrity and human values, that occurred as Hawk and Leopard interrogated their enemies throughout their quests. These moments of reflection were some of the most well-written paragraphs, and they were a welcome sight to read.
Another strong point for this novel is that the vocabulary is both elevated and diverse, potentially introducing the reader to new words and turns of phrase. However, this technique was not always correctly employed, heavily impacting the interpretation. At times, it appears as if the storytelling takes a backseat to the profuse usage of charged vocabulary or complex sentence structure. Since the most important feature of a novel is the reader’s experience, the text merited a concentrated review to simplify its language and reduce the number of fanciful sentences. To give a concrete example from the novel, a phrase such as “Upon the finalization of his deliberation” could have been simply expressed as “After deliberating,”. This issue unfortunately carried over into the characterization and speech patterns of the main and side personalities, resulting in dialogue that is often robotic or unrealistic. Despite this, it was clear that the novel had undergone many rounds of professional editing, being relatively free of errors.
As a whole, the entire story was an enjoyable read and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys action-driven plotlines that build on themselves, rather than those fictional stories that follow a predefined sequence laid out in the prologue. It was a solid 3 out of 5.
