Solaris Seethes (Solaris Saga book 1)
By Janet McNulty

I enjoyed this book. I gave it a rating of 3 out of 4 stars mainly because although the story is great, I didn't find it to be entirely addictive, and there were a few things that I didn't quite like about the style of writing. The author adds a lot of details, and I didn't find any of them unnecessary, but some details were added in using brackets which made me feel like they were afterthoughts. Personally, I didn't really like this, and these added descriptions occur throughout the book. Having said this, I liked the style of writing overall. I can usually tell within the first two pages of a book whether the style of writing is one I will enjoy or not. I read through the first two pages and was happy to keep going. I was never bored and I never found the story or the writing style too complicated. It was lovely to read.

The story is about a heroine who sets out to save her planet and the rest of the galaxy from a madman and his crew. Fighting for this cause are some unlikely people from a distant planet that the main heroine's people generally see as really primitive, so much so that they don't even ever consider it as anything more than a planet they dumped their waste on in the distant past. Along with the sassy spaceship, Solaris, you can imagine that this makes for quite a story. I really saw Solaris as a character in her own right and grew quite attached to her. The character development is great, and the story flows along at a good speed. It had just the right amount of action packed excitement and calmer moments.

The story combines everything that I love in a good well-rounded story: action, comedy, and a little romance, as well as tragedy. The author describes the different planets with a lot of detail and I can clearly see these strange and often beautiful places in my mind. The galaxy that she creates challenges the boundaries of my mind, something I look for in science fiction books and movies. The character's themselves have great back stories so you feel that they people you can get to know. I do want to mention that the plot is just complicated enough that you need to pay attention, otherwise important detail can be missed. There is definitely nothing wrong with that though, stories are meant to be read well and details are meant to be taken in so that we can have a full picture of the story in our minds.

I choose science fiction books carefully because I often find them tacky, or just feel like the stories and the worlds or places that the stories are set in too far fetched. I didn't feel this way at all with this book. Everything in it, although outlandish to us earthlings at times, were things that we can relate to, but still strange and different enough to be interesting. I also found that the concepts that were mentioned in the book regarding earth opened up fascinating possibilities for our future. I got really excited about that.

I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy science fiction. If you love imagining places that may be different from those you see every day, you will love the various locations in the book. If you enjoy good character development and stories about everyday people doing something great, you will love this book. You will definitely love this book if you enjoy futuristic technology as well as the emerging technology we have today. It's a great book if you would like something exciting to read. This is a good book for those who like books that are in between longer stories and short stories. I enjoy books of this length so I was in my element. It wasn't so long that I took forever to read it, and not so short that I was left feeling bereft. I am genuinely interested to see where the rest of this series goes. This is only the first book of four. I suspect it's going to be an awesome series.
