I really wanted to love this book, based on the description and the reviews I was looking forward to it, but I just couldn't get into it, I almost gave up on it, to be honest, which is uncommon for me! I will say this, total A for effort and concept, it reminded me of The Last Starfighter almost right from the start, a B movie I've always loved. The overall story was entertaining and if all you are looking for, and don't mind sporadic profanity then this is a great way to spend a few hours.
As for how it fell short, I definitely think this novel would have benefited from a professional editor but based upon the errors I found, the type size changed randomly in three places, there were awkward to just plain incorrect word choices, literally there were a couple of words that just weren't actual words (I CLINCHED my token and followed). The writing was simplistic and the world-building was very basic. The science behind the science just wasn't there and the military terminology and situational descriptions felt like it was based upon a background of bad television.
I think this was a decent first attempt for a new writer, I am not familiar with the author but this seems to be a first work, but this doesn't feel like a complete and ready-for-print publication!
