"We Are Voulhire" is Matthew Tysz’s debut novel introducing readers to the vivid fantasy world of Voulhire. Right from the start, Matthew immerses readers in an intricately detailed magical society with charming small-town intrigue. Through the eyes of newcomer Galen Bray, we gain insight into both the societal workings of Magnum Caelum and the personal journey of self-discovery Galen undertakes.

The story starts out at a brisk pace as Galen arrives by boat in Magnum Caelum, gradually piecing together the clues to his uncle’s past and the mysteries surrounding the suspicious former lord, Meldorath. Galen is a likable protagonist—driven yet cautious after a difficult upbringing. His curiosity and work ethic are appealing as he adapts to his new home and responsibilities. Galen’s backstory provides an authentic motive for the character without slowing down the plot’s momentum. While the first third of the novel is focused tightly on Galen, the scope gradually expands to weave engaging threads with other memorable characters like Rowan and Isla. Their developing relationships with Galen keep the intrigue freshly unfolding. Elements like Galen’s inheritance, Rowan’s motivations, and the enigmatic history of the town and its previous lords are hinted at rather than spelled out directly, sustaining an air of mystery.

Galen’s internal journey of self-discovery presents a refreshingly down-to-earth theme amidst the richness of magical lore and political intrigue. His coming to terms with trauma from the past represents an authentic, nuanced character arc. The hopeful implication that people can heal and move forward from even the darkest experiences adds tremendous heart. The vividly brought-to-life setting of coastal Magnum Caelum and its picturesque natural beauty are a constant pleasure. Historical and cultural details gracefully elucidate the town, its superstitions and politics. Minor characters like Marshus, Isla, and Beverly are intriguing despite limited page time. The creative magic system and mythology hinting at a deeper lore leave readers eager to learn more. The editing of the book is nice; it is free from grammatical errors.

In "We Are Voulhire," Matthew Tysz launches readers into a richly realized fantasy world with mystery, intrigue, and the promise of further depth and adventure to come. Main character Galen Bray's engaging personal journey and the town of Magnum Caelum itself leave readers invested in returning to Voulhire for future installments. This debut novel shows great promise and storytelling skill from an author to watch. I would rate it 5 out of 5.
