Review of The Chronicles of Brelhiem Novella One: Of Goblins and Grim Science
This is a story of Two travelling rangers Graham and Elidyr with their horses and a dog Fengrik. They take a detour through a small town where lots of thefts are happening because of goblins. So these rangers take the job to investigate and make money off of it. During this adventure they meet a mage Naomi who helps one of the ranger Elidyr when he was injured in a fight with goblins. After a recourse in Town's inn, both Rangers and Naomi realize they are looking for the same person(Evil warlock Isaac). So they make a plan to attack Evil Warlock together. But evil warlock knows what is happening in town because he has a spy and kidnaps Elidyr who is recuperating from the injury when Naomi and Graham was out of the inn. Final showdown is how both Naomi and Graham rescue Elidyr from evil warlock and defeats him.
This story contains a bit of adventure, investigation and fighting. What I liked about this story is that, it has mostly of dialogues between characters in each chapter. The main content of the story was shared to readers through dialogues. Story spacing was on point like author is not exaggerating or pulling the story along like an elastic but conveyed what was relevant to the story. Some Clever maneuvering of plots like when Elidyr investigates to the keep was well plotted. Graham knows what's he is doing on hunts were good to read.
Even though story has relevant information, this story is missing major explanations. Like what beings are living this fantasy world, what are all relationship between the characters, detailed account on who are all good guys and bad, rarity of beings, Goblins are bad whereas dwarves were not, New things introduced are not explained properly.
It's confusing for a reader to read a name in a conversation but doesn't understand who that person is because there is no explanation next to it but at some other scenes later on. It is difficult to read and connect these small irrelevant details.
When Elidyr kills a goblin in the head using axe, I was horrified and thought why couldn't he just knock him unconscious instead. The story was going in one direction suddenly he kills the goblin in gruesome manner. So it's a bit hard to digest that goblins as evil.
In this world, humans , Mages and other beings are living together but only goblins, half goblins are considered as bad. If author mentioned goblins as evil creature beforehand,it wouldn't have been that horrific from my point of view.
I'm also not sure why author uses wizardess for referring Naomi instead of a witch, maybe it's this fantasy worlds reference? no idea.
I also got confused for a bit when Graham calls Elidyr son when we are already in middle of the story. I thought they were master/apprentice. If author is trying for shock factor he got that when naomi finds about Elidyr but relationship status doesn't play a big role in the story later on. So I'm not sure why it was mentioned in the middle.
And it was hard to map out the new areas/locations in imagination like first Graham and Elidyr maps out some areas then at the end Isaac does too, Maybe a rough maps out drawn would have been useful or author should have revealed new places as the characters travel in following series instead of dumping them all in the first series.
All the jargons used are just gone over my head, As a new reader, I couldn't understand a single thing other than author already explained in the story.
Loved the scenes where evil spy was dismissed, Graham dismiss those traps while rescuing and the idea behind it.
I laughed a little when those guarding dungeon starts playing poker even though evil warlock is still giving instructions, that was funny.
Fengrik was a loyal dog and the way he fights the goblins was cool.
Noami was portrayed as a clumsy but kind mage, It was done properly. However when she heals Elidyr in the Inn using a shrapnel just doesn't look like a mage to me but an ordinary doctor. I liked how she played with elemental magics. We get it, she has big chest but the way Graham emphasize it to her when he just met her is a bit weird to read.
So overall, It has Good plot, story pacing is excellent, weaving the mystery and adventure was good but lacking in information about the world and relationships of characters we are reading about to follow the story effectively. We have to muddle through first 2 chapters before story gets started. Since I liked the Story plot as a overall I give this 3 out of 5 . If author explained a bit more of relationships, about this world and new things as story develops. I would have raised a point in my review.
