We are Voulhire:A new Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz.
An intriguing story of Galen Bray ,the protagonist ,who flees from the war torn land of the princes seeking refuge in Magnum Caelum in the kingdom of Voulhire.Handed over to him, is a forge, an inheritance from his late uncle, Galen Onita. As he familiarizes with the Voulhirian culture,he encounters Rowan. The two acquaintances set out in a non-ending adventure exploring their interests oblivious of the upheavals stirring up within the kingdom. What awaits this humble and naive boy as violent and devastating events unfold within the kingdom?
Hillport , a town within the kingdom, suffers great tragedy under its two former lords, Orlin and Meldorath .People seem more petrified of Meldorath ,a mage, known to have committed multiple atrocities.Though believed to be dead ,Meldorath remains imprisoned .Hillports deteriorating economic and political status prompts the kings assignment of Aldus Alderman,a former judge, as its new lord. He struggles to revive the town giving hope to the despairing people .Will he succeed considering the uncertainty and looming darkness of the former lord that haunts the town?
We are Voulhire ,A New Arrival Under Great Skies ;is a novel with thrilling concept at its core based on ancient voulhirian history ,religion and politics to be precise. The incorporation of magic makes it more interesting. Tysz meticulous choice of words in detailed characterization effectively builds up on the plot.Extraordinary coherence is employed ,perfecting its chronology.Tysz is also exemplary in the way he employs the various writing styles to convenience the reader. The dilemma ,for example ,keeps the reader guessing the eventual climax.Sexual content has been minimized to almost none, promoting morality.
The unappealing aspect of the book is on the way some characters are abruptly terminated;Aldus Alderman's death got me offguard.Furthermore the writer gives more credit to the mage ,Meldorath.Cruelty and inhumane acts inflicted on most characters at their deaths is so heartbreaking.I`d recommend build up of a character who`d at least be a pain in the neck for the seemingly invincible Meldorath.
I would rate this book four out of five stars. This is because I find most science fiction narrations partially boring mostly due to the fact that they seem too unrealistic to be integrated into a normal human set up.The book, though,is well written and edited.
However,I am a great enthusiast of history and politics and the thematic concerns encompassed in the plot makes the book an irresistible page turner.Being the first book in a series of nine books, there is an undying urge to read the rest of the books .I personally look forward to reading the remaining eight.
I`d to some extent analogize the book with the novel Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. For anyone enchanted with epic fantasy, science ,magic, adventure and history ,this is the novel to go for;it would surpass your expectations.
