The series debut, Dreamfarer by John B. Rosenman, brings the reader into a post nuclear war era. In this world, the majority of the population chooses to live a utopian life in Cerebral Interface Units or CIUs. Their physical bodies are cared for by professionals while their minds are transported to pre-destined dream scenarios. Samuel Adams has chosen to follow the majority and enjoy an escape from a war-ravaged planet. He is interfaced to a CIU and absconds to a world where pure existential bliss occurs. That is, until he becomes immune to such escapism. After Sam’s body becomes resistant to this unconscious manipulation, he is thrust into true reality where he must balance feelings of abandonment while developing some seriously steamy relationships. He voyages through self-discovery and transforms into the revolutionary hero of his time.

Editing for this novel was well done and left little errors to discover. A name error in the beginning of the book, in which “Blake” was turned to “Black”, forced a reread in order to understand if this was an error or another character being introduced. In the closing stages of this book, a continuity plot error involving characters again leaves the reader to back track with the intention of understanding what is trying to be portrayed.

I rate this book a 4.0 out of 5 stars. The introduction to such a futuristic world seemed chaotic with a hastily unfurled plot that left me trying to grapple with my understanding of events. Despite a clunky transitional start, Rosenman spins a futuristic tale that quickly enthralls the reader and leaves them eagerly venturing on. He paints with words to spin a story that you cannot consume fast enough. The basis of the book explores many worryingly real theories of a plausible future that, as a society, we grapple with today. I was intrigued to explore these chilling potential outcomes of the many traumatic events we are currently living through. Samuel Adams is the hero that we desire to exist in order to maintain a hope for humanity in the face of human kind itself. This imminent world created by Rosenman leaves the reader terrified and yet hyper motivated to focus on our present, to revolutionize our own thinking, to prevent this society from actualizing.
