Review of City of Shards
Larin's unusual fits of rage began when he was just four years old, triggered by emotions like anger, pain, or encountering phrases tied to his outbursts. Larin's uncle waged a solitary battle against Oarl's gang, ensuring safety within the Wormpile district's walls. Despite this protection, Oarl's gang seized the chance to provoke Larin's outbursts by tormenting him whenever he left the safeguarded confines.
The extent of bullying escalated to physical violence, causing bloodshed and fractures. This torment extended to those close to Larin, leaving him isolated and deeply despondent. The cause and significance of these outbursts beckon inquiry.
Seeking refuge within the library, which Tewin guarded, Larin found a haven. During Tewin's slumber, Larin ventured where he was forbidden: the Lyrashi texts. These pages housed knowledge of Carver creatures, their Lyrashi tongue, and the magic it birthed. When Tewin stirred, Larin resumed his scripture study, delving into the lore of the three dominions—new gods, old gods, and demons. Through this book, the interplay of this universe, its diverse deities, entities, and Larin's episodes come into focus.
The initial portion of the book centers on establishing the world's foundation and character introductions. While some action is sprinkled throughout this phase, the true excitement unfurls in the latter half. While the early pacing is relatively measured, it's essential for grounding the narrative. The author adeptly maintains interest by incorporating action and intriguing elements at the outset, thus avoiding tedium. Noteworthy is the author's ability to craft a comprehensible world despite a multitude of characters and locales.
The book's action sequences encompass visceral brawls, swordplay, and magical clashes, all detailed to an immersive extent, engrossing readers in both the battles and characters' inner struggles, particularly Larin's. The book excels on all fronts, tracing Larin's growth and self-discovery. Engrossing from start to finish, the book displays impeccable editing, I found not a single error in the whole book, leading me to bestow a flawless "5-star rating" upon Steve Rodgers' "City of Shards."
I endorse this book to enthusiasts of epic fantasy teeming with magic and godly beings. Rich in world-building and vivid imagery, it's a compelling read. If you crave a unique, adrenaline-pumping experience, this book deserves your attention!
