A Kingdom Forgotten by Charles W. McDonald Jr is the first in a series of novels that tells an intricate story primarily through Damon of Basrat, a prolific womanizer abandoned by his father as a child who wishes to avenge the death of his first wife, Dallia. There are several time periods in the worlds of: Earth, Graelon, Kaleion, Perion and Setinon. The instruction manual provided at the beginning of the book helps the reader follow this story as it clearly indicates the different separations.

Although primarily a science fiction novel, it also works as a romance novel thanks to the exploits of Damon. Those who enjoyed the Game of Thrones books would probably find something appealing in this book. The romance genre was a tool to introduce characters. I found this clever.

If paid attention to, the plot lines intertwine, and the careful reader should have little difficulty following what is going on as the pace increases towards the end of the book and Damons plan becomes clear. This book is the first of a series. The development of the plot in subsequent books will be interesting. I would warn that it is not for the casual reader as they may find themselves lost in the different characters and time periods.

Many characters are introduced later in the book, such as Mira, who becomes one of Damon’s romantic partners, which means the plot does not tire. It sets the stage for the rest of the series as we look forward to seeing how important these characters are to the bigger narrative.

I would like to have seen more background about the different worlds as this was heavily focused on character development, although this may come in future books.

I look forward to reading more from this author. I am pleased to award this book 5 out of 5 stars. The author achieves a difficult task in their bringing together different plot lines and genres.
