This is a review of the website and phone application Audiobooks. As part of completing this review I read, Course of Love: A Novel by Alain de Botton. The book is identified as Modern Fiction. Audiobooks can be accessed online from a computer or by downloading the App onto your phone. You are able to access and listen to your books through both methods and are able to start your book on one device and continue it on the other.
My first interaction with Audiobooks was through the website on my laptop. The website is easy to use and steps you through the registration process. There is also a tab at the top of the page that clearly explains how to navigate the website. You are able to browse books based on the main genre as well as through sub genres in order make it easier to find books that fit your taste. This allows readers to quickly look through books of interest instead of navigating through books that may not be of interest and possibly lead to frustration.
I listened to the book through the App I downloaded onto my phone. It was very easy to use and did not prove to be frustrating which was my first worry. On one occasion, I had to pause the book and accidentally started it again which caused me to pause it a second time. The next time I opened the application to listen to the book it prompted me to choose at which point I wanted to resume the book. I appreciated this as I did not have to go back and try to find where I had originally wanted to pause the book. The one downside of the application is that depending on the narrator it can be difficult to hear when the narrator changes their inflection for different characters and there is a lot of ambient noise.
The book, Course of Love: A Novel by Alain de Botton is about two characters named Rabih and Kirsten and the evolution of their relationship. From their first meeting, to years down the road, the story is told largely from Rabih’s point of view. The ups and downs that occur during this relationship can often mirror the relationships of others which can produce feelings of empathy and understanding. At times it can be difficult to feel for the character of Rabih because even though he is a dynamic character the changes he makes are explained quickly in the last few chapters. The total reading time of the story is seven hours and seven minutes.
I rate Audiobooks 4 out of 4 stars. As someone who rarely reads audio books I found the website and application easy to use and would recommend it to others. By being able to access the books anywhere this would be an excellent application to be used on a phone while driving long distances. I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars. The changes made by Rabih at the end of the books seemed to be rushed through in order for the author to end the book. Where you were introduced to the many facets of the character throughout the book as a reader I was left unsatisfied and questioned whether a change in the character had truly been made. Over all, the book was well written and allowed the reader to identify with the characters, especially for readers at the same stage of life as the characters.
