Review of Where Wolves Lie
Werewolves, demons, vampires, and magic are all part of the world created by Aleisha Dinisi in her novel, Where Wolves Lie. This is the first book in the Armageddon State series. Pagan O'Riley, or Paige, belongs to a clan of wolf-shifters that lives in the northeastern sector of Alaska. Despite being an outcast within her clan, Paige has been chosen to attend Dromen's University for the Supernatural. This school is dedicated to educating representatives from the various supernatural factions in order to promote peace and mutual understanding between them. The founder of the school also built it in hopes of finding the five who were predicted to fulfill an ancient prophecy and save the world. Will the school succeed in fulfilling its goals? Can all supernatural factions cooperate to eliminate the danger that threatens their existence? Will Paige be able to stand out despite her obvious limitations? Will she find her true love out there?
I liked how the book starts, showing how Paige is being treated within her clan and how she is obviously different from the rest. The school is an interesting place where she meets new people and makes both friends and foes. Although the theme of magic, supernatural creatures, werewolves, and vampires has been extensively tackled in literature, the author has added her own unique ideas. The presence of a school with supernatural creatures reminds me of the Harry Potter series.
The author's writing style is nice and engaging. Paige is a protagonist who can easily be loved. I enjoyed her relationship with her teammates and members of other teams as well. It's great that the book shows that there are many qualities that can make someone worthy other than being fierce and strong. The author has also succeeded in piquing my curiosity, and I would like to read the next book in the series.
On the other hand, I must admit that this is not one of the best books I have read tackling the world of mythical creatures. I was also surprised at how half-demons were depicted in a very likable way. I don't mind depicting any sort of mythical creature as kind or evil, but in this case, the word "demon" is rendered meaningless. However, upcoming events in the next books in the series may prove that my assumptions were inaccurate, as many questions are still waiting to be answered. The book also contains some sexual content, which I did not appreciate. I will never consider it appropriate to embed such scenes in a book when they can be subtly implied. Although not profuse, profanities are also included in the novel. Another drawback of the book is the relatively large number of typos and errors. In addition, as the story was told from the first-person perspective, it did not strictly follow many grammatical rules. Many sentences appeared to be incomplete or lacked proper punctuation. I believe it is worth it for the author to hire a professional editor.
I was not sure how to rate this book. It was an enjoyable read, but it fell short of my expectations and had many drawbacks. Therefore, I believe it deserves three out of five stars. Those who enjoy stories of fantasy worlds and supernatural creatures may enjoy this book.

Yes, I guess it would be super cool to be surrounded by supernatural creatures. Thanks for your comment and for sharing your thoughts.María Andrea Fernández Sepúlveda wrote: ↑25 Jun 2023, 13:46 I would definitely attend a University for the Supernatural! And I'm glad the author gave a different spin to the topic because, honest, it's been explored to exhaustion. I do like the nonsensical aspect of a nice demon. I think it's whimsical, but I get your point.
Great review!
