Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
An engaging fantasy-fiction, We Are Voulhire - A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a story about a war for power, hope for a new life, and willingness to bring change in society.
We meet Galen Bray when he is fleeing from the Land of Princes to a city in Voulhire. He is ready to leave his miserable life behind for a fresh start in Magnum Caleum. Rowan, Galen's uncle's executor, meets him and helps him adjust to the new town. On the other side, King Wilhelm wants the township of Hillport to forget the cruelties of their previous lords and have a new beginning. To change the situation, he appoints Eldus Alderman as their new Lord. But King Wilhelm is keeping a secret of his own from the townspeople. Also, a threat from mysterious people who call themselves Riva Rohavi is looming over Voulhire. What will King Wilhelm do in these situations? Is Galen connected to these mysteries?
The author has created a unique magical world. The concept of biomage or the imbuer was new to me. That little similarity to tom riddle's diary from Harry Potter. Hmmm...Loved it! My favorite quote from the book is, "You are the author of your own story." I understood the meaning behind the name of the book, maybe because it was a new beginning for both Hillport and Galen. I loved Galen as a character. He is shy, helpful, and understanding but not gullible. I loved his curiosity to understand magic, and maybe in the later books, he is much more than he seems to be now? And also would love to see how the friendship between Galen, Rowan, and Demetrius develops.
The book has 320 standard pages and is the first installment in the We Are Voulhire series. The story is narrated from different perspectives. Most of the book is like a base for the upcoming books in the series. The readers will either love the book or will not like it. It will be either a hit or a miss. The book has graphic descriptions of some of the scenes. There is violence against the children. Such topics will not be suitable for young ones.
I will rate the book 4 out of 5 stars because of its intriguing storyline, the urge that keeps the reader wanting to know more about that fascinating world, and how well-edited it is. The one-star deduction is because it seems a bit boring and slow-paced at the start.
I would recommend this book to all magic lover people out there. It is unfit for children as it has mentioned some disturbing topics such as pedophiles.
