We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is the first of nine books by Matthew Tysz. This first novel sets the scene of the country of Voulhire and some of its key players. The story moves a bit slower than a typical one-off story since more books in the series will follow up in greater detail. The author takes his time to show what makes the characters tick and describe the places and things in the world.

The main character, Galen Bray, escapes his home full of war and poverty to move to Voulhire, a prosperous and peaceful land. However, he discovers that not everyone in this new country has the same peace-loving mindset. There are several other characters throughout, bouncing between the different people during different chapters.

I most enjoyed the characters in this book. You can tell that the author enjoyed getting into their minds and letting his readers know what drives them. I like that even the bad guys have redeeming qualities. I am keen to learn more about them. The structure of this book made me yearn for the next one in the series because I have become so invested in the plot of this story.

I disliked most that some of the sentences were a bit wordy. Also, some of the adjectives in the book were really out of this world. I don't remember the last time I had to look up quite so many words while I was reading. Another thing I found odd was the number of hyphenated words and colons in the writing.

We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz earned 5 out of 5 stars from me. I found it very interesting, and it was well-edited. I only found one possible error, and even that one could be debatable. There are a few scenes of violence in the book, so I would not recommend it to anyone who cannot stand brutality, but overall, it was a pretty safe read for all ages and religions.
