Terms of Service:
Subject to Change Without Notice

By Craig W. Stanfill

The book, Terms of Service: Subject to Change Without Notice, is about the world centuries from now. In this future the language is Panglobal. All of the pronouns are female for everyone. Everyone dresses the same. There is no distinction between male and female. They are now referred to as outies and innies when it comes to intimacy. Artificial Intelligence controlls everything and everyone even though the humans like to think they are in control. At the beginning of the book we are introduced to Kim and through Kim we learn all about this strange futuristic world she lives in. Although Kim was born and raised in this world, she soon realizes that something is wrong. When she starts asking questions The Company starts drawing her farther inside of their web of control and lies. This does nothing but cause Kim to ask more questions. Why is she so sad? What is this feeling of emptiness deep inside of her? Where are these fragmented memories coming from?

The author, Craig W. Stanfill, has written a very captivating story about the future and what could, theoretically, happen. He takes the first of three sections in this story to build an understanding of this world and the day to day happenings. With this foundation set, the rest of the story is very fluid. He does an excellent job showing the desire of humans for freedom and control of their own lives even with all of their needs being met and, in most cases, even provided for free. He is able to convey how humans need human contact and the freedom to choose who they are with and how they spend their time together. Every time Kim is given a choice, it is never a true freedom of choice over her life.

Some readers may be offended with the amount of sex, alcohol and drugs that are talked about and used throughout the story. I found this to fit into the story of how the humans are searching for something more meaningful than the day to day drudgery of life as they know it. It is also a way for The Company and The Hierarchy to further control the masses.

This is exceptionally well edited as I did not find any errors in the book. The story is well-written and presented in a way that was easy to grasp and understand. The characters have all been given relatable personalities, even if they only have a small role in the story. Because of these reasons I give Terms of Service: Subject to Change Without Notice, a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.

I would recommend this book to someone who loves a good science fiction story with suspense weaved into it. This book had me thinking about it and trying to hurry back to it every time I had to set it down. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading the next one. Oh, did I mention? Great cliff hanger at the end!
