We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz

The book starts with an introduction to a poor, young man, named Gallen, who is running to the docks, trying to escape guards who are chasing him. Gallen asks a captain from a nearby board for help. Initially, the captain doesn't want to get involved but ends up helping Gallen and slaying the guards who wanted to arrest him. Gallen is then given safe passage to Voulhire, leaving behind the war-torn island.

During this trip, we learn that Gallen is headed to Magnum Caelum, as he’s been left an inheritance from his uncle which he hopes will turn his life around. There is a part, during this trip, where the captain tells a story to the passengers about the Emperor of Lullabies and his four sons. To the Emperor's despair, he learned his sons were planning to overthrow him and take his Kingdom. Instead of punishing the sons, the Emperor gives each son an island to rule which leads to war.

One part of the story develops when Gallen reaches Magnum Caelus and he meets Rowan, who is there for business reasons by following his uncle's wishes in handing over Gallen's inheritance along with a letter. The two become good friends as Gallen eases into his new life. However, as the story progresses the two set out to make the country safe again, what they find is not what they expected.

We also learn of the town called, Hillport and its tragic story. Two former lords committed horrendous crimes against the town's children and people. Although the people knew one lord is dead, the most feared of the two, lord Meldorath might not be.

As the reader, you can feel the emotions that the characters or book sets out to achieve, including sympathy, envy, and jealousy. However, I found the book not an easy read where forming a picture in your head is not always achieved. Flow and consistency are not equally applied throughout the book. There is a lot of difficult words used to describe what is going on, and when you have characters or places where the names already are hard to pronounce, the words to describe certain thing are not needed at that level. Character description wasn’t always clear, and neither was what was happening in some scenes which made understanding the story and what is happening difficult.

Once you get into the book, it has a lot of excitement and suspense. I did enjoy it in the end.

I rate the book 3/5
