Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
Matthew Tysz's We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is an intriguing fantasy novel full of adventure and enchantment. The narrative begins in the starving and war-torn Land of Princes, with Galen Bray as the book's main protagonist. The current state of affairs in the Land of Princes forces Galen Bray to depart and seek solace in Voulhire, a magical land. The kingdom of Voulhire is stunning, successful, and brimming with potential. Magnum Caelum, his new home, greets him with a warm welcome. He is utterly enamored with the tales of the splendor of Voulhire's cities, which seem to be true. However, in the kingdom of Voulhire, there are fearsome creatures that skulk in the shadows and gain dominance quietly. When Galen discovers that he is the sole beneficiary of his "deceased" uncle's fortune, he sets in motion a series of events that lead him to more horrifying revelations.
I enjoyed the author's narrative approach and character development the most in this book. Matthew thoroughly develops his characters throughout the novel, and his narration technique combines first-person and third-person narration. This form of narration breaks up the recurring pattern of a monologue, keeping the reader intrigued by the novel. He was also impressively adept at transitioning between scenes without confounding the audience. I appreciated Matthew's creativity. It aroused my interest and prompted me to ask myself questions, the answers to which I discovered as I read.
Despite the numerous positive aspects of this book, there were a few negative aspects that I disliked. In some sections of the book, the excessive use of vivid description delayed the progression of the narrative. In the next installment of the series, I would recommend that the author tone down the vivid description of sequences that have a minor impact on the narrative. I also noticed that a few of the personalities used contemporary vocabulary as opposed to ancient language.
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz has been expertly edited with no grammatical errors impeding its readability. The author's ostensible description of sequential events and other numerous positive aspects make this book worthwhile reading. The desire of Galen Bray to unravel the mysteries surrounding his true identity and the events surrounding Lord Meldorath's presumed death make this an exceptional work of adventure. Nonetheless, due to the aforementioned drawbacks, I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.
Due to the presence of near-offensive language and mild sexual content, I would only recommend this book to mature readers who are interested in adventure and magic.
