Terms of Service is an eye-opening depiction of humanity’s willingness to surrender freedom for the sake of comfort. I give this dark satire 4 out of 5 stars. The author excellently sets the stage by narrating a typical day in the life of the main character, Kim. By following Kim, the reader develops a clear vision of the dystopian society in which individuality is outlawed and all citizens are monitored, scrutinized, and ranked based on a social cohesion rating. Main character, Kim, blindly obeys all rules as a means of maintaining and advancing her social rank. While she feels as though something is missing, dread does not set in until she begins questioning her reality.

The book presents an important concept while keeping the reader interested and engaged. The book caught my attention immediately as it established the environment in which the story takes place. While the main character’s initial way of thinking is out of ordinary, the societal indoctrination is depicted so well the reader understands how Kim came to think that way. The end of the book preludes to the next book in the series and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

The only thing I would have changed is I would have liked to have known the gender of Kim. All characters use she/her pronouns and Kim is primarily a female name in English culture, but I was never quite sure since gender constructs were a thing of the past in the story. Any hint that might have given away Kim’s gender early in the story would have helped me to visualize the character as I typically do when reading.

Overall, this was a great story. I enjoyed every minute reading it. Kudos to the author for stepping out of his lane to write a story with such a profound concept. I did not notice any typos or grammatical errors, so kudos to the editors as well.
