Review of We are Voulhire: Someone Else's End
In this 3rd installment of the We Are Voulhire series, Matthew Tysz delves into the histories of our heroes. We learn of how Roland located Galen and of Galen's hardships growing up. These stories then set up a background to explain the succeeding attack in this addition as another player is introduced. Matthew brings excitement through the attack on the capital city. It is unexpected and it happens swiftly. And similar to the last 2 books, an important character dies.
We are Voulhire: Someone Else's End is brief and short, the same as the last 2 books. I prefer longer and fewer books in the series, especially in the sci-fi genre. Book series like the Eragon trilogy are bulky as the heroes overcome challenges and proven themselves at the end of the book. However, in this series, it is only in the 2nd book that our heroes prove themselves. Michael's books are short and end suddenly just as the storyline gets interesting. For instance, the invasion of Virko and Hillport are the only highlights in the previous books and the books all end as soon as the invasion ends. There is little to no resilience in the city which gives the impression that evil is winning over good. It is a good cliffhanger for the next book in the series, although a depressing one. Also, there are supporting characters such as; Beth of the Cosmos, Lord Kayden of Virko, and Marshus Alderman. These characters are interesting and their stories need to be told as well.
The book is professionally edited and pleasant to read. It is a great sci-fi book and readers will enjoy the fictional universe and its politics. As there is no continuity between chapters, writing each chapter based on characters was creative of Michael. His writing style makes it easy to suddenly introduce a new character, only to be woven into the storyline. There is also some non-borderline profanity that may be offensive to some readers. I recommend the book to mature readers as the book has some violence unsuitable for young readers.
I highly recommend We are Voulhire: Someone Else's End and rate it 3 out of 4 stars as it is well-written and has a captive story. However, it is too short for my liking and given my investment in the series, I prefer a longer storyline and a more in-depth story of interesting, supporting characters. For this reason, the book is good and I give it a 4 out of 5 stars as it is an above-average read.
