Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first entry of a fantasy series. Having escaped the Land of Princes, Galen Bray is eager to begin a new life in Voulhire. Fascinated by his new life in Voulhire, Galen is quick to fall in love with the country. But also in Voulhire lay malevolent beings who seek to use the powers of magic, spirituality, and science to cause ruin to the country. Down in a rural southern town, a powerful mage had overthrown the ruling Lord. The consequence of which was exile to an “undisclosed location" to die. But did he really die? Galen is set to discover the truths lurking in Voulhire.
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a gripping novel. This book was beautifully written. The city of Voulhire in it's entirety was well depicted to fit the context which the author intended to portray. The structure of power and authority in Voulhire was finely illustrated. The Palace of Cathidien was a fine display of the highest political structure as well as the Mianora council. The Eiodi represented the highest religious structure. Along with this, the author weaved a magical world and mages into the story. The diversities in all these made reading the book a thrill.
I particularly enjoyed the part of the story that revolved around the Aldermans. Eldus Alderman had just been appointed Lord of Hillport after the chaotic six months in which the people of Hillport had witnessed dilemma in the hands of two Lords. I was especially intrigued by Eldus's two teenage children, Marshus and Isla. Marshus's endearing courage in contrast to his sister's shyness was a perfect blend with the rural people of Hillport. I loved the simple yet classy life of the Aldermans and their proficiency in Hillport. I credit the author for this creativity.
Although fascinating and enthralling, the concluding part of this book might not do complete justice to the expectations of readers. I believe that the escape of Alabaster, disappearance of Marshus, death of Captain Barcaedi, and other events that followed was a really suspenseful closure to the book. While on one hand, some readers expect a comforting ending that gives a sneak peek into the episodes that follow. Others like a very suspenseful ending like the one employed in this book. One that creates an anxious drive to read the episodes that follow. Either way, I do not consider this a negative factor.
Hence, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. This book was very well edited with no errors. Readers who enjoy fantasy series would find this piece amusing.
