Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies written by Matthew Tysz is a science-fiction novel about kingdoms and magical beings. Escaping from the Lands of Princes full of barbarism and war, Galen Bray went to the famous kingdom of Voulhire. At Magnum Caelum, a city of Voulhire Kingdom, he found peace and joy. The natives were charitable. He inherited his great uncle, who was one of the best blacksmiths in Voulhire wealth and craftsmanship. He also strived to forge for himself a place in Voulhire that he now considered home. However, in these lands full of powerful wizards with unfathomable magical means, things are far more complex than they seem. Under its peaceful and glorious appearance, the kingdom of Voulhire is facing attacks from many parties that want its destruction. There was the Riva Rohavi, the legendary mage Meldorath or even the King of Voulhire whose scheme might doom the kingdom. Once again, in a dire situation, will Galen Bray stay in his newly found home, or will he escape? Read this book to find out.
I appreciate the extremely detailed way in which the story was unraveled. From the characters' personalities to the setting of the story, all have been extensively well-detailed, which leaves a lot to the imagination. Throughout the novel, Matthew Tysz has often used the first-person viewpoint to narrate the character's story. This helped a lot in understanding the characters’ backgrounds and the whole story. Another positive aspect is the plot of this book. It is appealing and draws the reader into a magical multiverse with overpowered individuals, betrayal, and political struggles. For example, it was remarkable the way Wilhelm, king of Voulhire held in his deepest fear while trying to appear confident and appease the people in Voulhire. Another interesting thing in this book is the sarcastic personality Matthew Tysz has attributed to his book's characters. One obvious example is Midus Maido, the chancellor of Mianora. Throughout the book, all of his conversations are rhymed and full of overtones. He was never tired of harassing the King of Voulhire.
The negative aspects of this book are quite obvious. There is the slow progress of the story and the scarcity of action that fans of fictional books adore. It made the story look boring, as one needs a lot of patience before reaching the main events. In fact, throughout the book, emphasis was put on explaining and setting the character's personalities, as this is the first book of a sequel. It was also deplorable to notice that till the end of the story, equal emphasis was put on all the characters, making it hard to identify the protagonist of the story. Apart from these, there are instances of violence in the novel but no profane or sexual content.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it is very interesting, full of mystery, and exceptionally well-edited. I look forward to the next one in the same series.
I recommend this book to fiction lovers, especially fans of fantasy and the multiverse.
