Review of Terms of Service
Imagine having your whole life and every move controlled by someone. You won't want to imagine that because the thought alone is highly suffocating. Well, your unimaginable thoughts are Kim's reality. Kim, an AI trainer at the Artificial Intelligence Company, had a simple plan for her dream job: to follow the rules, keep her head down, and draw no attention to herself while hoping to increase her social cohesion rating.
Craig W. Stanfill's Terms of Service is an exciting story set in a world imagined to exist in the future. A world different from anything humanity has ever known. A world where The Hierarchy, Corporations, and Companies ruled, each with their terms of service that must be obeyed, with disobedience attracting consequences. A world where humans and Artificial Intelligence coexist and AI controls all aspects of human life. From food to transportation and every single thing. At the AI company, Kim's job involved teaching a robotic device named Automatons. Her plan was, however, supposed to get her to work with the higher-level Ais, but things seemed to take a different turn when her trouble-making friend Shan reconnected with her. On that fateful day, Kim and Shan veered off on their bike ride onto a path not meant for humans, and Kim realized that there was more to the narrative than was let on.
Terms of Service is a science fiction and technical book that describes a futuristic world controlled by robots and technology. There are so many things I love about this book. First of all, this book was well written, and Craig did a great job with the storyline and even used language and words that enhanced the futuristic vibe of this book. Another thing I loved about this book was the protagonist's character development; it was fantastic and made me feel emotional connections with her. I also found the high-level technology described in this book fascinating, and I wish it were available in our present world to be used for better things that don't include controlling humans.
Although the initial chapters had a slow start, the later chapters were fast-paced and kept me engrossed and intrigued. It was professionally edited, as I found no errors while reading. There's one thing I didn't appreciate about this book, it was the Ai's excessive control over humans, even their conversations. This made me emotionally distressed while reading this book, and at other times I felt angry at how helpless humans were depicted to be.
And because of this dislike mentioned above, ill rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I'll also recommend this book to mature readers who love books about robots and technology.
