Review of Frustrating Fascination
Living in denial is what most people tend to do so as to fit in with what society deems a normal way of living, and judging other people’s choices of lifestyle might sometimes affect the person judging more than the one being judged. Frustrating Fascination by Debra Mckenzie is a fiction book that illustrates what a young man went through on his journey to finding himself and acceptance after going through a traumatic experience. After having gone through a difficult divorce, Sean was finding it hard to accept the circumstances of what led to their separation. This made him go through an emotional trauma that caused him to have an illusion about what really caused the divorce and who he really was. Being judgmental about the type of lifestyle his former wife chose made it hard for him to accept the fact that she would leave him for another woman and not a man. The decision he made at the end of apologizing to his friend Bruce after having judged him for his way of life and the treatment he had given him was the first step to his healing. One wonders if Sean's decision to meet his former wife was a good one and how it will affect his healing process.
What I like most about this book is the fact that it talks about a topic that few writers are not able to write about. It teaches one to have an open mind about things we do not believe in and to have patience, understanding, and respect for other people’s choices in life. The second lesson it teaches is that in judging and condemning other people, the person judging might suffer more consequences than the person being judged. The book was short, not boring, and invoked a desire to understand it, which made it not difficult to finish reading.
The book was short and precise, but if there was one thing to improve, it would be the flow of the story. I did not understand where reality and illusion separated until I reached the end.
The book was professionally edited. The flow of the book was confusing to me, and I found it difficult to differentiate between reality and illusion. Maybe the reason is that I have not read many books of this type. I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has encountered a situation where they have a person who is either gay or a lesbian closer to them and they are finding it hard to accept and understand their choices. People who are also living in denial for one reason or another are a good fit for this book, as it would help them understand and accept their situation.
