Review of Terms of Service
Craig W. Stanfill depicts a future in which artificial intelligence now rules every aspect of society in his science fiction book Terms of Service. This book has shown us a scary future that will soon be our reality if we continue to develop AI to one day govern mankind. The book addresses several subjects that are typically disregarded. One of the book's main themes was human rights. The author demonstrated how AIs may be used against us and deprive us of our rights.
The hierarchy of this new world views self-centeredness as a sin; therefore, pronouns like "I," "me," and "mine" are frowned upon, while "we," "our," and "ours" are used by everyone expressing themselves. Those who attempt to break from the ludicrous regulations of the AI are labelled as cults, and if they are discovered, they are punished with demerit points and sent to the outlying regions, where they must endure a horrible existence. Kim, the book's main character, has a lonely and unhappy life.
Kim was removed from her mother (or birth provider, as they are referred to in the book) and handed to a mentor 4 years after her birth following the regulations. This mentor raised Kim without showing her any affection and instead trained her to always respect the laws. Her ambitions were realized when she grew up and became an AI trainer. Yet even with wonderful friends, a respectable income, a cosy apartment, and her ideal career, she still feels dissatisfied. She battles feelings of betrayal, loneliness, and emptiness every night as she drinks herself to sleep. Sometimes she wonders whether there is more to life than the routine the AI has created.
The fact that this book demonstrates how, even though AI might be beneficial when it comes to outcomes and orderliness, it can turn against us if we allow it to rule every part of our lives is one of the many reasons I adore it.
This book serves as a warning that must be taken seriously; otherwise, we humans risk losing our humanity sooner rather than later. This book was entertaining and educational, and I had no complaints about it.
I gave this book a 5 out of 5-star rating because I think the plot is really interesting and original. The book was exceptionally well-edited and error-free. I would recommend this book to computer scientists and AI instructors worldwide since I believe they would benefit greatly from reading it.
