Review of Terms of Service
Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill is a science fiction book about a future society governed by artificial intelligence. Under the absolute rule of the AIs, the basic human rights such as freedom of speech, expression, movement among others, are no longer effective.
Kim, who is the protagonist, lives a repetitive life in which all of her actions are performed without any thought. She, living in a small apartment, controlled by artificial intelligence, has o control over the actions of her electronic appliances. Her feeding is controlled by her fridge; her housebot determines her clothes for the day; her shower has total control over the water temperature, and her dating life is controlled by the matchmaking app. The entire society's housing is arranged geometrically and is divided into districts that indicates your social standing and status. The lower your social status is, the closer you get to the borders of the country. Kim lives in a comfortable location and has a stable job at The Artificial Intelligence Company constantly feels the lack of purpose and meaning in her life. She was one of the lucky ones who got the chance to complete schooling, and land a good job. Her job required her to train simpler AI devices incapable of thinking for themselves and performing complex tasks. Kim, who hoped to work with the more complex AIs, got her wish but the price for her wish was something she never imagined. She came across secrets that will change the entire perspective of her world and would launch her in a series of events that will keep readers captivated and glued to the book.
What an exciting read! I was really captivated by the whole book and I couldn’t just stop reading it, from beginning to end. The author's writing style is captivating and descriptive of the places and emotions felt by the characters, AIs and people alike. It was really one of the best things about this book. I could empathize with the anxiety, fear, and pressure that the characters were going through. Something that I really admired was the portrayal of how the AI functioned. How they worked and the fact that it was possible for them to have emotions also. The plot development was exciting and kept me going through the entire book. The author did a great job with the chapters' usage. At the end of each chapter, I felt fulfilled but was also curious to know more. The same goes for the book's ending. I also loved the chapter titles because it gives you the same feeling you get when watching episodes of a television series. It makes you curious about what it means and what is going to happen next.
There is really nothing negative I could say about the book. There were very few sex scenes and drug and alcohol usage mentioned in the book and didn’t seem out of place or overly concentrated.. Alcohol was also excessively consumed especially by the protagonist-Kim- who did it solely because she was confused and couldn't find any other way to fill the void inside of her.
In conclusion, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It was an entertaining and captivating book that I totally recommend reading. I recommend this book to all fans of science fiction and people interested in books on artificial intelligence and futuristic settings.
