We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz tells the story of Galen Bray who was rescued from the Lands of the Princes thanks to an emissary sent by his uncle. Galen arrives in the Land of Voulhire looking for a new life, making the most of the opportunity that his uncle, already deceased on his return, offers him by leaving him his property and money. Galen discovers that this new world is full with magic, peril, and political intrigue as he strives to make sense of it. As Edward navigates the complex political landscape of Voulhire, he also struggles with his own identity and fears, trying to find his place in this new world. The story is full of action, magic, and surprises, with a richly detailed world and a cast of intriguing characters.

The book has a lot of good qualities. Rich and immersive world-building is used, and the landscape, history, and culture are all distinctively portrayed. The characters are complex and varied, each having their own personality traits and motivations. The plot moves quickly and unexpectedly, and it includes aspects of intrigue, action, and adventure. The book also examines deftly integrated into the plot themes of power, identity, belonging, and leadership.

However, I must point out that the book may seem complicated to follow for some readers due to the number of characters, their stories and world building. In order to keep track of all the various components of the story, readers may need to pay great attention to the story. Additionally, the magic and magical characters are developed in a rather vague way, making it difficult to follow such characters. Finally, some readers may feel let down by the novel's unanswered questions because it leaves the story unfinished. As the first book of a series, this may have been done on purpose, although some readers might have preferred a more definitive conclusion.

I rate the book 4 out of 5 stars because the book has a lot of good things going for it, like a interesting characters, and a rich, immersive setting. Tysz's style is eloquent and descriptive, and the subjects he explores throughout the book are well presented and easily integrated into the story. Nonetheless, i do not give the book 5 stars because some readers may find the detailed narrative, certain flat characters, and unresolved stories to be confusing.

Finally, I recommend the book to anyone who love elaborate world-building and detailed fantasy and science fiction books. Readers who like stories with a wide range of characters, unexpected turns, and an exciting plot will likely love this book. Also, readers who enjoy books with deep and interesting subjects like prejudice, power dynamics, and redemption will find a lot to like in this one. However, the book might not be appropriate for younger readers or those who are sensitive to some dark and serious themes.
