In the second book of the Korian Saga, Giorgio Garofalo brings together once more Korian, Doric, Will, and their friends as they prepare once more to face their dark enemies. Following the respite and preparation on The Trap, they must return to Endura to find Hades’ treasures in a bid to learn more about their foe in order to ultimately defeat him. On their heels are Aaron, his underlings and his Stragoy.

The journey will take them across the sea, through Nahire, the Linhar Desert, and into Mindwood. Korian and his friends meet unusual creatures and people which will challenge their views as well as their courage. They discover secrets relating to Hades’ narcissistic past, and along the way learn more about each other’s lives.

I really enjoyed this book as each character has their own importance. Although they follow Korian as the protagonist, they are individuals with their own unique traits and skills, but ultimately work well together as a wonderfully mismatched family. They are not just united against a common enemy, but because they genuinely care for each other.

The concept of ‘reap what you sow’ is well incorporated into this book for both good and evil. Goodness is remembered and paid forward. Evil is remembered and, well, karma.

I do personally love fantasy sagas which include maps and glossaries, and smiled with delight when I first saw the map of Endura. I also enjoyed the unusual creatures living on Endura, some of which have already got a spot in my heart. I look forward to seeing them again in future books.

I found that the destinations within the storyline were not always properly expressed, even when they are only meant to be subtle, which had me wondering what the point of their travelling was. This tripped the story up at times but once the reason for their next destination was expressed, or a character assumed knowledge of their next objective, the storyline resumed its flow. There are a few typos and grammatical errors, but on the whole the book has been well edited.

I give Korian: Ark of the Fallen King 4 out of 5 stars as, despite the few hiccups mentioned above, it is a wonderful and well written book which I will definitely pick up and read again. I very much look forward to the next instalment in this saga.

This book would suit readers who like to delve into fantasy voyages and enjoy discovering new creatures and races. It has a smooth reading style reminiscent of David Eddings, and as such I feel it would be good for people looking to take their first step into the fantasy genre.
