Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
“We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies” is a Novel by Matthew Tysz, like many fantasy novels this book focuses on multiple characters to portray a larger story/ point of view than what you would grasp if the novel focused on only one character. This novel is certainly more character driven than plot driven, it focuses on the introduction and development of the main characters rather than directly setting up the plot, leaving the reader with hints about the direction the book is going, very clearly setting up for future books.
The story itself focuses on a number of characters in the land of Voulhire, mainly on Galen, a man from the land of Princes, who has recently relocated to a small town in Voulhire. The author lays out the area where the story is set well, such that the reader is left wondering when or how the characters are going to cross paths.
In short, this novel is a book complete with magic, kingdoms, and well developed characters, which ended with the reader wanting more. Although the book started to slow it developed into a page-turner that I enjoyed.
Not to say there were no drawbacks, the author often used sexual comments/ jokes that often felt like we could have done without them. I felt that this increased the reading age of this story to an older audience (18-30 years), whereas if this was not included that book could have been targeted at a wider age range.
Based on the above I have rated this book 4 out of 5 stars. I feel that this is an accurate rating, as the book has set itself up to be a series that is full of promise. Furthermore, regardless of its drawbacks, the book left me wanting more, ending on a subtle cliffhanger that make me want to read the next book.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy, it is often hard to find an easy-reading book that also has so many wonderful fantasy aspects to the story. However, this book would probably not suit people who find it hard to follow multiple characters or switch between areas or perspectives. Although this is a common way that fantasy authors create a wider world, some readers can find this distracting meaning they may miss the finer plot details.
Matthew Tysz has created an entire world within this book, with hints and multiple perspectives he leaves the reader with anticipation of how the story will play out, certainly worth a read.
