Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is quite a fantastic read. This book comprises an introduction to a very complex universe in which the physical and magical worlds collide while following many characters from these worlds that are all connected in some way. Tysz has created this fictional kingdom of Voulhire with great depth and captivation, in which the plot is developed through segments of several perspectives in different places throughout the kingdom. Magic is intertwined throughout this story as a catalyst for both good and bad events to occur, some being quite devastating.
What I enjoyed most about We Are Voulhire is the depth of the lore surrounding this kingdom, Tysz did an amazing job of fully submerging the reader unto this world through a plethora of imagery and background information. Every town discussed in this book was described with great visuals as well as the culture of the townspeople, and every town was intrinsically different. I was fully immersed in this book straight until the dramatic end. As I was reading it often felt as if I was watching the pilot episode of a new tv show that was bound to become the next game of thrones. I never expected what came next.
While this book is just the beginning of a great tale, some of the characters could've been less vague, such as Galen and Meldorath. Their characters have so much to them and yet, they are so closed off and mysterious in their ways. However, this book ensured their importance many times throughout, thus their reticence is likely purposeful and uncovered in future additions to this story. Overall, there isn't much to criticize with this book. It was a great start to a colorful tale and it wrapped up with a major cliffhanger on the destiny of Voulhire.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars, it's a very entertaining read that allows the imagination to prosper. The timeline and perspectives of this book flowed together very well and I did not notice any errors in grammar or spelling, as it was edited very well.
I would recommend this book to anyone that likes medievalist fantasy mixed with magic, politics, and mystery. It is a melting pot of all things considered dark fantasy and I believe it will be very popular amongst that community of readers. I also believe this book would be very successful as a TV show if it falls into the right hands.
