The protagonist, Kim, lives in a world where everything is controlled by Artificial Intelligence (AI) – house appliances, friendships, social rating and even sexuality. Society’s social structure is carefully monitored, identity and preference are seen as ‘selfist’ and children are taken away from their ‘birth givers’ at a young age. Kim is a hard worker, obedient and keen to stay out of trouble. The author conveys that she is not entirely comfortable with the AI’s controlling everything, but she keeps her head down and works her way up in the Artificial Intelligence Company. Kim does reasonably well for herself – that is – until her childhood friend, Shan, suddenly makes an appearance and everything begins to unravel.

This book is very much Orwellian - 1984 - in nature but also has a 'The Matrix' vibe to it and explores some interesting concepts in regards to AI and controlling AI and how AI and technology can control humans lives. It asks some interesting ethical questions which could become almost a reality in some way to our own real world especially as AI is becoming a part of our society now and will continue to do so as the years go forward.

It provides a scary picture of the future but all credit to the author for creating this world and providing us a second look at where our world is going and if it is a good thing. 4 out of 5
