Review of Terms of Service
Artificial Intelligence has always been a fixture in science fiction. We are used to seeing it as part of the future. But lately, it has become a large part of our present. In Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill, we are faced with a very important question: Who is really in charge? The biggest fear around AI is that it will take over control of humanity, and Craig explores that reality in Terms of Service. AI has basically been deployed to create a better society for mankind where there is more equality and less selfishness. But as with any government-run program, things are not always as they seem.
Kim is the focal point of Terms of Service, and we see her grow and learn as we get deeper into this new world. Craig W. Stanfill takes us through a day in the life of Kim, and we get to see what it is like to live in a world controlled primarily by Artificial Intelligence. She works for The Transportation Company to help train lower-level AIs to look for violations to the service agreements. Kim is surviving in her current existence, but she is not satisfied. She takes a bike ride with her best friend Shay into unchartered territory, and everything changes. She realizes there is more to the world she is living in than what meets the eye, and she questions everything. This leads to her being brought before the Governor of her district to face disciplinary action. What will Kim’s fate be?
I really enjoyed how Craig W. Stanfill took the time to truly describe the world Kim lived in. The context it provided made the rest of the book even more captivating. Terms of Service is certainly thought-provoking and very well-written. Kim’s character becomes more likable as the story progresses, and I wanted her to find happiness.
The only negative I have about this book is they speak a slightly different form of English that is more disjointed. It takes a few chapters to get accustomed to the jargon and cadence of how they speak. But then, it is barely noticeable. There Is quite a bit of setup to the main storyline, but it is necessary to understand the world Kim is currently living in.
I would give this book 5 out of 5 stars because it had me questioning whether I needed the amount of automation I had in my own life. I love books that really make you think about your own situation and this book definitely accomplished that. It was professionally edited and easy to read.
I would recommend this book to science fiction readers, or those who are a little reluctant to give in to too much technology. I shared this book with my friends, and it provoked several conversations about Artificial Intelligence and the role it plays in our lives. I rarely find a book that I share with so many people, and that speaks to the quality of this material.
